Reduced bleeding in children having tonsillectomy

Mr Peter Robb and Dr Geoff Thorning have recently published their findings, using tranexamic acid to reduce bleeding in children having tonsillectomy.

Tranexamic acid is widely used in surgery, in trauma care and to reduce menstrual bleeding in women with very heavy periods. The medicine works to prevent healing clot breaking down, reducing the risk of bleeding in healing tissue.

By reducing the risk of bleeding on the day of surgery, children can have their surgery as a day case, going home within six hours of their operation.

Their research was published in the surgical journal, Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in March 2014.
